What is the armor of God?
Paul's famous metaphor in Ephesians 6: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the rest of the spiritual armor explained.
In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul tells believers to put on the whole armor of God in order to stand against the devil's schemes. He lists six pieces of armor, each representing a spiritual reality. The passage is one of the most vivid and practical metaphors in all of Paul's letters.
This guide explains each piece of armor, what spiritual reality it represents, and how the metaphor draws on the Roman military equipment Paul would have seen daily as a prisoner.
The context: spiritual warfare
Paul frames the Christian life as a battle. The enemies are not flesh and blood but principalities, powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. This does not mean Christians should look for demons behind every bush. It means the moral and spiritual challenges of life have a deeper dimension than meets the eye.
The armor metaphor is defensive, not offensive. Paul is not telling believers to go on the attack. He is telling them to stand. The posture is one of firm resistance, holding ground that has already been won by Christ.
The six pieces of armor
The belt of truth holds everything together. The breastplate of righteousness protects the heart. The shoes of the gospel of peace give stable footing. The shield of faith extinguishes the fiery darts of the enemy. The helmet of salvation protects the mind. The sword of the Spirit — the word of God — is the one offensive weapon.
Each piece represents a spiritual practice: living truthfully, pursuing righteousness, spreading the gospel, exercising faith, resting in salvation, and knowing Scripture. The armor is not magical. It is practical discipleship expressed in military imagery.
Prayer as the atmosphere of battle
Paul concludes the armor passage with a call to prayer. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. The armor is put on through prayer. Without prayer, the armor is theoretical. With prayer, it becomes operative.
This connects the armor to the rest of Ephesians. The letter is about the church as the body of Christ, unity in diversity, and the power of God at work in believers. The armor passage is the climax: believers standing together, equipped by God, for the challenges of the world.
Wearing the armor today
The armor of God is not a one-time event. It is a daily practice. Each morning the believer puts on truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, salvation, and the word. Each day brings situations that test every piece.
The encouraging truth is that the armor is provided by God, not manufactured by the believer. God supplies the truth, the righteousness, the faith, and the word. The believer's job is to put it on — to choose, each day, to stand in what God has given.
