Bible verses about friendship

Passages on loyal friendship, the value of true companions, the wounds of a friend, and the Bible's vision of faithful human bonds.

What does the Bible say about friendship?

The Bible values friendship highly. Proverbs returns to the subject again and again. David and Jonathan provide one of the most famous examples of loyal friendship in all literature. Jesus himself called his disciples friends.

These verses explore what makes friendship strong, what threatens it, and how a good friend differs from a flatterer. They are useful when thinking about relationships, loyalty, or what it means to love a friend faithfully.

Key passages

Proverbs 17:17

"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. No change of outward circumstances should abate our affection for our friends or relatives. But no friend, except Christ, deserves unlimited confidence.

Proverbs 27:17

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

Iron sharpens iron, as a friend sharpens the character of a friend. We are cautioned to take heed whom we converse with. And directed to have in view, in conversation, to make one another wiser and better.

John 15:13

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Greater love has no one than to lay down his life for his friends. Those whom God loves as a Father, may despise the hatred of all the world. As the Father loved Christ, who was most worthy, so he loved his disciples, who were unworthy.

Proverbs 13:20

"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."

Walking with wise people makes you wise; foolish companions bring harm. Multitudes are brought to ruin by bad company. And all that make themselves wicked will be destroyed.

Ecclesiastes 4:9

"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour."

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour. Surely he has more satisfaction in life, who labours hard to maintain those he loves, than the miser has in his toil. In all things union tends to success and safety, but above all, the union of Christians.

Ecclesiastes 4:10

"For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up."

If one falls, the other lifts him up. Surely he has more satisfaction in life, who labours hard to maintain those he loves, than the miser has in his toil. In all things union tends to success and safety, but above all, the union of Christians.
