Bible verses for baptism

Key passages for baptismal services, cards, and invitations — verses on water, new life, identification with Christ, and the meaning of baptism.

What are the best Bible verses for a baptism?

Baptism is one of the most important acts in Christian life. Whether infant or believer’s baptism, the ceremony draws its meaning from Scripture: death and resurrection with Christ, washing and renewal, public identification with the people of God.

These verses are the ones most commonly read during baptismal services and printed on baptism cards and certificates. Each one illuminates a different facet of what the water signifies — cleansing, covenant, death to the old self, and rising to new life.

Key passages

Matthew 28:19

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"

Go ye therefore and baptize — the Great Commission establishes the practice. This evangelist passes over other appearances of Christ, recorded by Luke and John, and hastens to the most solemn; one appointed before his death, and after his resurrection.

Romans 6:4

"Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

Buried with him by baptism into death — baptism as participation in Christ’s death and resurrection. Baptism teaches the necessity of dying to sin, and being as it were buried from all ungodly and unholy pursuits, and of rising to walk with God in newness of life.

Acts 2:38

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Repent, and be baptized every one of you — Peter’s Pentecost command. From the first delivery of that Divine message, it appeared that there was Divine power going with it; and thousands were brought to the obedience of faith.

Galatians 3:27

"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Real Christians enjoy great privileges under the gospel; and are no longer accounted servants, but sons; not now kept at such a distance, and under such restraints as the Jews were.

Matthew 3:16

"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:"

Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water. Christ's gracious condescensions are so surprising, that even the strongest believers at first can hardly believe them; so deep and mysterious, that even those who know his mind well, are apt to start objections against the will of Christ.

Titus 3:5

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;"

The washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Spiritual privileges do not make void or weaken, but confirm civil duties. Mere good words and good meanings are not enough without good works.
