Bible verses about leadership

Passages on godly leadership, servant leadership, the responsibilities of leaders, and examples of leadership in Scripture.

What does the Bible say about leadership?

Leadership in the Bible is always servant leadership. Jesus told his disciples that whoever wants to be great must be the servant of all. Moses carried an entire nation through the wilderness. Paul led churches through hardship and opposition.

These verses address what makes a good leader, what disqualifies one, and how leadership in God's economy is measured by faithfulness and service rather than by power and title.

Key passages

Matthew 25:40

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

What you did for the least of these, you did for me. This is a description of the last judgment. It is as an explanation of the former parables.

Proverbs 29:25

"The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe."

The fear of man brings a snare, but trusting the Lord is safe. Many are ashamed to own Christ now; and he will not own them in the day of judgment. But he that trusts in the Lord will be saved from this snare.

Micah 6:8

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

What does the Lord require? Justice, mercy, and humility. These verses seem to contain the substance of Balak's consultation with Balaam how to obtain the favour of Israel's God.

Joshua 1:9

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Be strong and courageous; the Lord your God is with you. Joshua is to make the law of God his rule. He is charged to meditate therein day and night, that he might understand it.

Philippians 2:4

"Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others."

Look not every man on his own things, but on the things of others. Here are further exhortations to Christian duties; to like-mindedness and lowly-mindedness, according to the example of the Lord Jesus.

1 Timothy 4:12

"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

Let no man despise your youth; be an example to the believers. Men's youth will not be despised, if they keep from vanities and follies. Those who teach by their doctrine, must teach by their life.
